The Honest Scrap Award

blog_awardI have received the Honest Scrap Award from three People; First from Maya – of Maya’s Well. Then there was the one from Mystic, a good friend who is currently in Pakistan doing her thing and writing on Imps and Angels, and lastly from Dada Serina, the best Shairi (Poetry) writer any side of the Sahara, and will find her on the other side, yaani, Upande Mwingine.

There are certain obligations that come with scrap award. The first is what I have just done; acknowledge those that have awarded me the Honest Scrap Award. The second one, which I am now embarking on, is to write ten things about myself: here goes…

  1. I am slow to anger. I pride myself in this because I have almost always remained objective since anger rarely clouds my judgement. I therefore come out as rational, but like everybody else, I am patient to a point.
  2. I am not your knight in shining armour. I am usually oblivious to many things that gentlemen are expected to do with the ladies. But here is what I will do; I will respect you, open the door for you, protect you when it comes to it, even try to be funny, provide financially (emotionally might be a hassle) and in turn expect you to understand that I am loyal (at times to a fault) especially because I probably won’t say I love you to prove a point (I hate clichés).
  3. I love Neo Soul, Classical Music, and an older version of Hip-Hop. Sade, Maxwell, Floetry, Joss Stone, Muthoni, Sauti Soul, Pentamony, Lira, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Heather Headely, Vivienne Green, India Arie, Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, Wycleff Jean, Mos Def, Dead Prez, etc. are the usual suspects. And I managed to get me a compilation of the top 100 classical music. These three genres do something to me; something beautiful.
  4. I love Kids. I plan to have a couple but above that, I hope to start an orphanage (God willing several) with a difference. I want an orphanage where the kids are not just surviving but where they can get access to the best education, healthcare, and all those little things that are natural to all the kids with parents (the ideal family atmosphere). Once I do this, I will be ready to die in my sleep.
  5. I do my end of the deal. I hate being a baggage and thus I cover my end of the deal every time. If someone told me they would pay me to do nothing, I will decline. I have a good head on my shoulders and I love using it. I work hard; I work smart and expect to be adequately compensated.
  6. I tell the truth as I see it. I do not BS. I realized a while back that it was easier to tell the truth. I had a tough time in High School especially with the admin but when I stopped lying to cover my tracks as I always got punished anyway; they still punished me even when I told the truth. I have been honest since because I realized that it is somebody’s choice to believe you or not, regardless of what the truth is.
  7. I am embarrassed by emotions and reserve mine for me – nobody needs to see a teary eyed me. There are those rare moments when I am really touched; and get this, even by some classic piece of music. I have a heart but prefer using my head first before taking things to heart.
  8. Sports; I am a bigger fan of rugby than football. Rugby has that extra punch to it that keeps me glued. But like all Kenyans, I have a favourite English team – Liverpool. I love chess too but I do not get to play it as much as I would like to – when you play it with people that you always be beat, your game gets worse and theirs better; so beat them, drop them and go play the better players. It in a way translates to life when discarding people who no longer add value to your life.
  9. I fear ignorance. I fear not having an opinion. I hate sinking to certain levels of thought. And therefore I read, write, and read some more. I listen too – but here is the thing; people need to be very careful who they choose to listen to. That usually makes all the difference. And the biggest success of all is to have some inflection and then listen to you. In addition, I do not want to live to that age where I can no longer use my head.
  10. I live and let live. As long as what you do or believe does not contravene the fundamental human rights of the next person – whatever floats your boat dude/dudette!

Finally, the scrap award requires me to award the scrap award to 7 other bloggers… (Those who nominated me should be here.)

And the winners are…

Drum Rolls…

Kaasa – the best blog for 2009

Dada Serina – I have never had this much fun reading swahili, EVER.

Ego vs. Wisdom – great heartfelt poetry

Funua – who reveals it like it is

The Way I see it – Intricate knowledge of Finance and Economics.

You should now spread the award to the rest of the Blogosphere…

  3. Hey,
Thanks for the compliment (truly flattered) but that won’t get me to write 10 more :D . That aside…

#8 Chess; Agree with you on that one. Playing with someone not on the same level feels like you are coaching them and that’s not fun at all! Love board games as well.

    #4 Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Was laughing when I read #2 where you say you hate cliches and then start 3 with the same words… ” I love…” … just my dry sense of humor.

    It’s been an interesting read!
    Have a great week…
    s.

  4. TamTam
    You are welcome.

    Kd*
I am a Scorpio. Neo Soul is truly Music for the soul.

    Serina :)
I knew someone would get that about 2 and 3, but I put it up anyway hoping one would not read much into it, he he he. You caught me with my hands in the cookie jar on that one. In my defense, I am yet to tell a girl I love her. As for Neo Soul and Kids, I confess.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    Regards

  5. Sasa Marvin? :-)

I didn’t know you were busy blogging and that’s why I’ve been AWOL from here (thought you were hunkered down over books). Hope masomo zinaendelea vizuri and I have crossed all my ten finger and toes for you to pass with flying colours.

Thanks for the compliment. You know, you’re the best! :-)

I like your list… you and I are similar in the ‘no BS’ sense and on almost all fronts except the ‘emotion’ one. I can be very emotional (temper). I also love that you open doors, and do the gentlemanly things. That’s so refreshing.

And the orphanage thing is wonderful, though when you get there, do a thorough background check and psyche analysis on the people you’ll hire to work there. Too many kids live in hell in orphanages, because they have devils ‘watching’ over them.

    Peace! :-)

    • Hey K. :)

Good to see you. You are welcome and you truly are the blogger of the year :)

Was AWOL myself but after finishing reading six tomes of Investment and Finance books, the blog became my release, but only temporarily. I actually sneak to blog, and feel as guilty as hell afterward. I have just started revising so will go MIA again.

On being a gentleman, I try. Not there yet. I learn though, day by day.

I hear you on the orphanage thing. I have seen that a lot too and that’s why I am thinking of something radically different. I am working out the modalities and psychoanalysis of people would be key – Thanks for that.

I have not been to your place for a while too. I see the blogs in my inbox and I get tempted but I resist – I am saving all those many posts to read them after the exams. My treat of sorts. I am sure I’ll have fun.

      Take Care

      M.

  6. Hi Marvin…I’ve not been around myself for a couple of weeks so am catching up *smile*.

Thanks for the Honourable mention in your Honesty Scrap Award…erm I have done mine on my blog…though I struggled to stay serious lol…I managed…a little *grin*.

Scorpio eh?…hello fellow water sign…I’ll not reveal your ‘real’ emotions lol just kidding *Naomi hides a cheeky grin* not that kind of cheeky either! lol

Anyway…not told anyone you love them?…no rush hun when I was young(er) lol it was said too easily without real meaning…it probably still is. I could never say it unless I meant it…to do so is pointless. If I say anything else on the subject I’ll be cliche-ing!

The orphanage idea is great though I have to go along with Kaasa’s concerns. Only today on the news there has been the conclusion of a ten year inquiry into child abuse by the Catholic run orphanages in Ireland that lasted for sixty years! The atrocities those kids endured were just unspeakable! So I’m glad you have considered that side of it. See you’re a gentleman already *smile*

Anyway hope you are well and studying hard…hope to catch you soon.

Peace Love Light and Laughter as always
